[RC] AERC Drug rule - Diane Trefethen

Good grief :(

Rancor and hyperbole over trace elements in hay and grain constituting
violations of our new drug rule. If ever there was a tempest in a teapot, this
is it!

It should be obvious to anyone that the veterinary committee had no intention of banning normal horse feeds. Rule 13 specifically prohibits "the administration of abnormal substances or of normal substances in abnormal amounts". It does NOT prohibit administering normal substances in normal amounts. And here is where the committee went astray. They assumed we knew what "normal substances" are. You know... hay, grain, water, the stuff horses need to live.

The appendices and all the subparagraphs of Rule 13 are intended to clarify and specify the parameters of Rule 13, not supersede the primary rule itself. So I guess they'll have to add these items to Appendix C. I just hope they include the phrase "including but not limited to" when they carefully detail the various hays, grains and other feeds found around the world that a horse might normally be fed. Otherwise, judging from the current discussions, some people will assume that if triticale or teff or dates or camel milk are left off the list, they must be illegal.
