Re: [RC] Conserving paper - Barbara McCrary

I wish someone could use the pine trees around here on the coast of CA for paper, since this particular species is dying from Pitch Canker. It's so scenic to pass by a forest of pine skeletons interspersed with still-alive (but dying on their feet) ones that have "red flags", branch tips that are red rather than green. :-(( This is a sure sign of doom for that particular tree. They stand there until they fall, one branch at a time, making a lot of litter on the ground. If harvested, sawn into 6x6 fence posts or 2x8 fence boards, then pressure treated, they make wonderful corrals and board fences, but it is almost too expensive to have them pressure treated. They have to be sent to a treating plant, 200+ miles away, and then back again. The chemicals used to pressure treat prevent the scraps from being burned, as they are toxic.
I don't much mourn pine trees either, and they sprout like weeds around here, too. If not controlled, they will take over a pasture in just a few years.

Angie (P.S. I drive a Honda car, always been a miser on fuel even when it was under $2 but I hate pine trees. They sprout like weeds around here, then fall on the trails (cut 5 yesterday) and I don't mourn them much.
