RE: [RC] Nancy Sturm - Nancy Sturm

Thanks, Mary. Our season was pretty much over anyway, so I'll just start
him back slowly and see if he stays well.

No, the horse had not been wormed. He had been to a ride in the Redwoods 4
weeks prior to his illness. Because I was going to be gone for over a
week to be with a child who needed to go to Shriners in Portland for
orthopedic surgery, I'd moved him to a very nice boarding facility three
weeks prior to his illness. He had been at the barn before because I ride
in there to meet the friends I condition with. There was no change of
feed, nothing new added to his diet, except grass turnout during the
daytime. The grass was pretty short.

Since he tested negative for just about everything, the vet's suggestion
was that he was stressed, allowing a change in the flora or microbial
population (or something like that) that allowed an opportunistic diarrhea.
Although his liver enzymes were normal, there's also the possibility that
he grabbed a mouthful of something toxic while out on trail.

Thoughts from a novice: had you wormed your horse with one of those
super-wormers (Praziquantal or whatever it's called) before the
diarrhea episodes began? My horse had the same sort of diarrhea attack
after I used ComboCare. My vet said he's guessing about 5% of horses
are badly affected and wished we had an ADA for animal products to
protect us from rotter-products like that overly poisonous stuff.

If you think the diarrhea occurred because of something consumed, I'd
bet you'd hardly need to lay off at all. If you think it occurred
because of illness, I'd lay off for a couple of weeks, then return with
two days, not in a row, of light work. As a former xc coach, that sort
of layoff, followed by a mild re-introduction, was plenty for an
athlete who'd been ill. After that we jumped right back into whatever
level of training we were doing before.

Good luck to you. I'm glad he's recovering nicely.
Mary K.
