Well, for a southern dog, I'd take a Catahoula.  But by and large the 
favorite on ranches (and pickup trucks in parking lots) around here 
appears to be the Australian Cattle Dog.  As long as you mind your 
business they mind their's -- but they have a stare that says "go 
ahead; make my day" -- a three-legged old Aussie kept my 60 lb 
lab/pit bull cross out of its yard simply by staring at my dog! -- 
and I have no doubt they would carry through if you ignored their 
warning.
