Re: [RC] what is the best dog to gueard horses? - Sullivan----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn Kinsky" <lkinsky@xxxxxxxxxx> But by and large the favorite on ranches (and pickup trucks in parking lots) around here appears to be the Australian Cattle Dog. As long as you mind your business they mind their's -- but they have a stare that says "go ahead; make my day" -- Yep, I got one of those critters. The ACD's are registered with the AKC and have lovely tails. Years ago. some darn vet started the practice of docking the tails. The ones that are tailess are typically called either blue or red heelers, in my neck of the woods. I always cringe when I see one without a tail. They ARE very protective, tough as nails, but unfortunately can be somewhat reactive. And....they do want to heel. I got mine as a year old rescue....she is an awesome trail dog, but I cannot break her of herding and heeling the horses. I do feel extremely safe jogging alone in remote areas with my ACD! They do look sort of spooky. Karen =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
