Re: [RC] BC judging - Beth Walker

OK, thanks. I always thought that one of the inputs was the vet scores on the ride card as well. Since it isn't , that isn't a factor.

On some rides, though, ride management does give out an award based just on the ride card vet scores alone. This one isn't an official BC, and they call it something else, and doesn't count for any points, but I would think it would mean something to the rider that got the award. It is just an 'extra' that ride management gives out, but I've seen a suggestion from time to time that this type of award be made official. Variation in scoring on the vet cards would become a factor then, I would think (and could be why such an award hasn't been adopted - just a guess).

BC judging is always done by the same (usually head) vet for all top ten (or
eleven or so) horses, just so the judging is consistent between horses.
Also, judging for BC doesn't allow for A-B-C-Ds, and doesn't have a specific
score for GI motility alone---the score is a numerical one and is for
Recovery, Hydration, Quality of Movement, Lesions and Soundness, which then
would include GI motility along with all the other parameters than entail
Fit To Continue. The categories for BC judging look less at "is this horse
in trouble, need to be pulled, or okay to continue to the next vet check",
and much more at "is this horse MORE fit to continue than the other top ten
horses".

While for most people at a ride, this would be true, it would not be
for those being judged for BC, or if the ride gives out an award for
the best vet scores regardless of placing. In those cases, getting a
vet that grades "hard" on some criteria could cost you the BC,
especially if your nearest competitor got a different vet.

It certainly isn't important from ride to ride, but consistency
WITHIN a given ride on a given day between vets would be, IMO
important for those trying for BC.

What they fail to realize is, it's just a letter on a vet card...it
doesn't necessarily mean that their horse is in trouble, or that
the vet thinks their horse sucks, or is a cause for shame. Some
people take these letter grades too $%#^@ seriously. <G> I guess
they take some sort of pride in their horse "getting all As" or
something.
