Re: [RC] Ham Radios - OT? - John Teeter

we use ham radios at the Owyhee rides (the Snake River Amateur Radio Club) - We will be integrating them in to our timing process during the upcoming AERC National Championship and (possibly) will try to do a real-time tracking system based on GPS/ShortWave integration.

We've found the Ham guys to be very focused on the details (who has crossed the highway, are the vet gates cleared, do we need water on the trail etc. There are also integrations SW->Cell which are interesting for emergency services availability. We've just aquired a 30ft tower which we'll put up to make it easier for them to work with us.

We basically have no cell phone coverage except in a few places, so sw is really our only alternative.

Hi,
I am wondering if any of you use ham radios either for managing rides or personally for emergencies or in remote areas. I am just wondering if learning & using ham radio would be a useful investment for communication at rides. I'm pretty sure most people use cell phones or walkie talkies, but just thought I'd check.
Thanks,
Jeanie
