RE: [RC] Standing Canter - Leonard.Liesens

Hello Nik,
You can find almost all styles on the european circuit, some sitting (many
frenchies are now sitting in the saddle), some just a few centimeters above the
saddle and "standing" straight, some doing rare things, then the "arab stype"
sitting in the saddle with the legs a lot forward.

As long as one is light in the saddle, everything is OK. To learn the "sleeping
canter", the best is to sit in the saddle to control the tempo and then slowly
give the reins to allow the extension of the neck for a more relaxed attitude.

Me I sometimes sit, sometimes stand... I think it is also good to change the
way your weight is distributed on the horse. Not to mention to change leads !!!

Someone last week posted a question on whether at the
trot majority sit ,post etc etc. As an extrapolation of the
question ,what do majority do when cantering?

At a ride, I do very little "sitting" of the canter. I only do so if I
want to use my weight as an aid to slow down the horse. Otherwise, I
come up out of the saddle just enough to get my ass off of it. It isn't
what I would call standing either, since to me, standing means bearing
my weight on my feet. I distribute my weight along the entire inside of
my leg from inner thigh to mid-calf (depending on the size of the horse)
with a small amount also in the feet.
