Re: [RC] Endurance is... - Keith Kibler

One man's "ultra excercise" is the next man's warmup.

There is varying evidence in the literature regarding the effects of "ultra-exercise." I've had the opportunity several times to interview one to the foremost authorities on exercise and it's effects, Dr. Ken Cooper, of the Cooper Institute, in Dallas. Dr Cooper is an icon in the field of health and fitness, and is actively engaged in ongoing solid research in those fields. He is the guy who actually coined the term "aerobics" back in 1968, and has been President Bush's personal physician since 1989. He was considered for the position of Surgeon General, but the last time we spoke, he said "I couldn't afford the cut in pay."
He has written several books, and a recent one called "The Anti-Oxidant Revolution" addresses the issues of the effects of increased free radicals produced in some ultra-athletes and the negative effects they can have on all tissues of the body, especially the heart and blood vessels. I remember him telling me about the guy who had done the world record numder of marathons, over 500, dropped dead of a heart attack at 63.
There will be variations, and exceptions to the rule, but he cautioned against "ultra-exercise" for most folks, and that moderate exercise seemed to hold the most benefits and carry less risk. He also recommended an "anti-oxidant cocktail" of certain vitamins and nutrients that those who engage in extreme exercise should take to help offset the free radical damage.
As for myself, whenever I get the urge to "ultra-exercise" or run 100 miles in one day, I simply lie down until the feeling passes, knowing I'm much healthier for it. Dr Q
