[RC] African Championship - John Teeter

http://www.endurance.net/international/2006WalvisBay/

I've been doing Steph's stuff (as she's off the net for a bit). The 2006
African Championship will culminate on Wednesday with a 160km race in Walvis
Bay (Walvisbaai) Namibia. It's a seacoast town. Surrounded by primal desert. I
put a google earth placemark on the equestrian center. You have to have
installed the free version of google earth to have it work. It's worth the
effort to install if you haven't yet. (I'm also making up a google earth tour
of the endurance sites around the world with as many gps trails as I can ....
later:)

But Walvisbaai itself is pretty interesting: "... Although Walvis Bay had
already been discovered by Diaz as early as 1487, it was only founded in 1793
by the Cape Dutch. Two years later it was annexed by the British. In 1910,
Walvis Bay became - like the entire Cape Colony - part of the South African
Union. After Namibia's independence, the only deep sea harbour on the Namibian
coast remained under South African rule and only in 1994, did the former South
African president F.W. de Klerk agree to return it to Namibia. ... "

This will be the first 160km ride held in Namibia. It will be the First Young
Riders event. It is the last leg of the 2006 African Championship, and it will
be the 2006 Namibian National Championship event.

The 160km race starts at 2:00am -- the loops run up and down the beach and
straight back into the dessert.

pretty interesting looking - especially the beach riding. looks like Pinamar:)
