Re: [RC] [RC] The Reality of Weight Divisions - Nancy Mitts

Our horse Racer would agree, too. Started out with me when I was a true featherweight, and then when Monte (HW) started riding him, he really struggled to finish that first 50. (I'd been doing 100's). Over time, he became conditioned to the extra weight. That doesn't mean that weight doesn't matter. Weight DOES matter, and it does a disservice to those (and their horses) reading this list to LEARN to keep insisting otherwise.
Extra weight can indeed be compensated for, to a point, by additional conditioning (horse & rider), improved riding ability and balance, getting off and running part of the way, etc. All good tips for larger riders, that do not change the reality of how the amount weight carried affects our horses. Some horses will simply be better suited to carrying weight than others, no matter what.
The heavier the rider, the more important correct fitting TACK becomes. So it would be counter productive to remove a few pounds by removing the saddle and therefore failing to distribute the 200 lb rider weight. I hope the heatwave breaks soon, I can't believe I even bothered to read all these posts.
