Re: [RC] Broken wrist- Phase II - delete if you are bored with it. - rides2farThe orthopedist recommends surgery to install a T shaped plate > Cons normal risks of surgery (anesthesia, infection, etc.) plate/screws may irritate tendons I got the plate both times I had extreme collarbone breaks. First, endurance riders aren't known for going easy on ourselves while we heal. It's probably best to anchor it as best we can. 2nd we're usually pretty robust, so hopefully would fight off infection better than most. At least that's my theory. One of the negatives to the plate for the collarbone was that if I were to do the same injury *again* the plate wouldn't give so they did another surgery to remove it after it healed. So, I've now had three surgeries on the site of my injuries, (plate in,plate out/ next injury: 2nd plate in...should get 2nd plate out now) When they do the surgery the nerves sometimes grow back differently so I have trouble knowing where to scratch when I itch. It may *feel* like it's itching on top of my shoulder but I may have to rub hard 3" lower to get it to quit. I talked to several people whose doctors had let bad breaks try to heal and a year later their bones were still shifting and hadn't healed. Meanwhile I did a 50 6 weeks after my injury. I was glad my doctor fixed mine and got it over with. If it were me, I'd probably get the plate. If the screws rub the tendons...it seems as if they could remove the plate. I just keep trying to find time to schedule to have mine out.
