Re: [RC] Broken wrist- Phase II - delete if you are bored with it. - Jeannie Gillen

I had a similar break....my wrist bones were pushed into my hand....they did
a
"reduction" to pull my hand bones away from my wrist bones....it hurt, but
it felt good to get the bones back in place. I refused surgery and pins,
etc. I opted for a simple casting...the Ortho. was concerned that it would
"slip" so he recasted me every 2 weeks....it slipped some... and took me
about 1 year to gain strength and balance again....It has been 3 years now,
and I can hardly tell it was broken...at 55 years of age, it is hard to tell
what is arthritic and what is scarring......My left wrist (somewhat
arthritic) is sometimes more painful than my right (the broken one) I think
I am glad I didn't have the surgery and pins...seems more complicated, hence
more likely to fail somewhere along the lines.........

PT for the nerves and muscles is important either way you go!

I ride 6 horses a week....consequently, I ride every day somewhere, on
someone, in some sort of saddle and some sort of weather, and frequently
pony another horse, with my right hand......I am definitely not compromised
by the injury.

The orthopedist recommends surgery to install a T shaped plate on the
underside of my radius to stabilize the bone fragments. I can choose
not to do it and get weekly x-rays to make sure that nothing has
shifted instead. I am not sure what to do at this point. If anyone has
personal experience with this sort of thing, I would be happy to hear
about it. I am also considering getting a second opinion.

Cons
normal risks of surgery (anesthesia, infection, etc.)
plate/screws may irritate tendons

Pros
I would have a removable cast and be able to do PT/exercise earlier
reduced risk of healing poorly and/or shortened radius bone

If you aren't too sqeamish, here are photos taken just before and after
in the emergency room, x-rays included. I wanted to be sure that my
camera still worked after the fall and wanted to remember what my wrist
looked like ...

Now to take inventory of the things I can't do for 6-8 weeks and
arrange for help:
muck stalls (horses are on full care temporarily with some extra
turnout for Paisano)
driving (arrange rides as needed, to work mostly or learn to drive one
handed)
work (typing one handed)

The doctor mentioned that he thought I wouldn't be doing anything with
horses for at least 6 months. (hmmmmm....) I don't think he knows me
very well.
