Re: [RC] Back Pain - Nancy Sturm

Hi Bruce,

I'll weigh in on the back pain conversation.

On October 1 last year I fell and had compression fractures of T6 and T8.
I was also diagnosed with osteopenia and started on Fosamax.

I really don't have pain that feels like it issues from the spine, but I
have some pretty awful pain in various soft tissue (I think) spots in my
back. I'm thinking these are muscle spasms. I can control them by sitting
in a great computer chair (thus I check my e-mal frequently), driving my
van, which has heated leather seats (gas prices make this a poor choice)
and with electro-stim.

I also have scoliosis and think perhaps posture contributes to setting up
the pain.

Riding actually seems to break up the pain, at least while I'm riding.
I've logged lots of training miles and one LD since I fell.

So, question #1 - what exactly is a compression fracture?

Nancy Sturm

Not true about the ab exercises automatically strengthening the low
back. I'll comment on that when I hear from Dean and Lyn on their back
problems. As long as everyone is okay with making it a learning
experience on RC, we can go into some detail about back problems in
general and the common myths involved. More later, Bruce Weary
