Re: FW: [RC] white line - Kathy Ramspott

Kim and Dolores,
I will get you a picture as soon as my husband comes home. I tried doing it by myself and it won't work. You would never know there was a problem until you picked up the hoof and started cleaning it out. At that point you can pick between the hoof wall and the sole. There is a gap about 1/4" deep where you can scrap built up dirt and tiny stones out. You can scrape to the point of seeing some white and that is when my vet said, that is why it is called white line.
If I took any other picture other then the sole at just the right angle so you can see there is a space you would never know there was a problem. In all the information that folks sent me I am starting to wonder if I should be calling it WLD. It seems awfully mild comparatively. Maybe once the farrier pared away some of the wall then you could see there was something going on.

Kathy,

If you can send photos of the foot in question? to Kim, shed like to see
head on shot,
lateral and sole shots.

WLD is actually quite rare and in most cases I find it comes from either
laminitis or flaring (flaring causes tearing of the laminae). You can see
an extreme example of a horse I've been working on by going to
www.clickandtrim.com/murray.htm. This horse was diagnosed with WLD about 2
years ago and shoes were the recommended cure. By the time I saw the horse
he had 20 degrees of rotation in his RF and 2 degrees in his LF. I pulled
the shoes and started bringing his toes way back. As of today, the RF is
almost completely healed with no more seperation of Coffin Bone and
Hoofwall.

The vet recommended soaking with some kind of antifungal, I never did, he is
fine.

If you feel an overwhelming need to soak, then try 2 ounces of Lysol mixed
with a gallon of water (warm water). Do this for 30 minutes 3 times a week,
much less caustic than regular bleach. The Lysol is regular old cleaning
Lysol from the grocery store.

You can also email me privately to discuss in further detail, my email is

Good Luck
