Re: [RC] [RC] glucometer - Truman Prevatt

There have been numerous studies (most of them involving at least in part electrolytes) at endurance rides going back to the 80's. In fact Gayle Ecker mentioned she had a database of blood panels of over 6000 horses. I've particated in 3 studies myself - all run by the University of Georgia leading up to the '96 Atlanta Olympics. There were studies at both the '95 and '96 ROC (and probably more than that). However, the rider did not receive the feedback till after the ride - in most cases months after the ride.

I don't know how Barney ran the Pride project but I suspect it would be difficult to vet a ride and provide real time feedback during the ride. There was one study I know of where there was real time feedback, Biltmore several years ago, and maybe that was what rased the issue. All the riders that signed up were given feed back on the spot- except for the FEI riders. This would be plainly against FEI rules.

After that was when the rider in questioned was DQed for supplementing with sugar based on blood analysis. The head vet made the decision. Rule 13 is pretty clear about invasive procedures and drawing blood to determine what needs to be put into the horse to go on does seem to cross that line.

Interesting. Aren't there blood tests that are done for studies during rides? Are those considered invasive and thus reason for DQ? Or is it the way the information is used taken into consideration to decide whether a rule was broken? If the rider had not added corn syrup, but had just taken the sample to be analyzed later, would that be ok?

My other questions are still valid, as I would imagine this would be an interesting thing to see in training and would transfer over to rides, even if the glucometer is a no-no at a ride.
