Re: [RC] Vaccinations - Truman Prevatt

Hopefully the new vaccination is better than to old. It was pretty much worthless - seven vaccinated, two got clinical signs of WN and I suspect at least two or three more (maybe 5) got sub clinical signs. Will I vaccinate in the future - probably not. I have the best vaccination possible - one bird and one mosquito. Lifelong immunity from the report my vet sent me.

Even if you do vaccinate don't assume it will prevent WN - it won't. The ever vigilant eye is the best course - vaccinated or not.

Since West Nile is not carried by horses (that is a horse can't get it from
a mosquito that bit another horse), but is carried by birds, if your
pastured horses are exposed to birds and mosquitos you should reevaluate
your vaccination schedule for West Nile.

PS. I have friends whose horses had very bad reactions to West Nile (i. e.
death)
