Re: [RC] re: 100 milers...speed vs. tradition - Barbara McCrary

A few years ago, a generous person offered to pay the sanctioning fees and
contact the necessary personnel to augment our 100 mile ride and make it FEI
sanctioned for the purpose of allowing riders to qualify. We had no
problems that I ever saw, and in fact, our regular personnel liked the vet
boxes so much that they set them up this way now, even if our ride is not
FEI sanctioned. The primary reason I don't FEI sanction is the extra cost,
the extra organization necessary. I do ALL of the organizing, the contacts,
the paperwork, the rider database, the printing, etc. for our ride. It is a
labor of love, but it has a limit. That limit is the extra work of
sanctioning with FEI. I offered the job to anyone who wanted it to be FEI
sanctioned, who would do that extra work and pay the extra costs. I haven't
had any takers. I also can't say that having it only AERC sanctioned has
caused any reduced attendance. As far as the difference in attendance
between the 75 and the 100 (twice as many 75s as 100s), as my daughter has
said, "Offer a choice and the riders will choose the easier ride." I
suspect she is right about this. Fortunately, there ARE just enough
hard-core 100 mile riders to make it worth while.

"...There is a bit more protocol about going through vet
checks. ..."

Personally as a rider I like the more organized and predictable vet checks
using the FEI system. When you are tired it is very much easier to follow
an organized ritual than to try to figure out how things are being done at
this ride.

Walking out a pulse lane around and back in, is also a logical consequence
of trying to gain a few seconds by taking your horse to the P/R person
sooner than you should.
