I'm always surprised when this come up and nobody mentions the difference between horses that "take up your leg" with a decent sized heart girth/spring of the rib cage vs those slab-sided beasts (which is of course where the dangling legs under the belly comes from).

yep, the build of the horse is so important when discussing horse height. I am 5'10" and all leg yet I rode a 13.2h drafty pony yesterday and didn't feel uncomfortable. Prolly cause she weighs a 1000 lbs :)


I've felt much more out of balance on much larger horses than her - it's all in the build of the horse.
