There are people, who do all of the things right, who like to have foals around so they breed knowing that they will sell for less than "the cost of production". They consider their operation to be a hobby. Others breed for their own use. Wendy's colt will be her endurance horse in 5 or 6 years. That is one less sale of a good 5 year old endurance prospect in 2009. If you add to this the fact that quality of even a carefully bred horse is not completely predictable, you have culls from large breeding programs on the market. GM and Ford do not have to produce 100 trucks to find one that can win a NASCAR race, horse breeders do have to produce many horses to find that race or show winner. Also it would take billions of dollars to start a new truck company, but you can start breeding horses for a few thousand.
