Re: [RC] [RC]Horse Buying/Selling - heidiIf you add to this the fact that quality of even a carefully bred horse is not completely predictable, you have culls from large breeding programs on the market. GM and Ford do not have to produce 100 trucks to find one that can win a NASCAR race, horse breeders do have to produce many horses to find that race or show winner. Ed, you are right that even careful breeding is not 100%, but if a breeder has to produce 100 horses to get one that does it right, then something is wrong. Nearly a third of our horses over the years have done well in endurance (high completion ratios, high mileage horses, several consistent winners and Top Tenners, etc.) and another large percentage are still right here in our own breeding program. No, it isn't 100%--but a GOOD breeding program DOES have a large degree of predictability. (And those of our horses that haven't gone into endurance are often out in trail riding homes, just making folks happy to own Arabs--several I'd LOVE to see in the sport, but I don't complain, because they have a good job and they're happy!)
