Re[2]: [RC] Horse Buying - Roger Rittenhouse

The problem I have with buying a youngin, is I am NOT.

I bred my mare two times. Raised then up and competed both.
One did the OD 100 still have her and ride her at 22.-- one did not make it.
lots of money went to breeding and raising - I did my own training.

When I was young - over 22 yrs ago doing the foal thing was fun and
a real challenge.
Now getting long in the tooth.. I need a civil well trained athlete.
I will pay the price for one.

I sort of agree with Jody some, if the really great endurance horse
is for sale by an endurance rider- who still competes - why?
I look for that exception

My latest project was NOT for sale by the owner - I made the offer
to buy him. The rider was not in the market to sell.. I really liked
him and wanted him.. this loss really knocked me back a bit.. I
never expected an issue... I thought I found my 'last' horse...

I would estimate I can only be doing this sport at the 50 mile level
for about 10 more years. I need a good horse that can go to work
today.
Thus I do not need nor want a baby 3 yr old or younger..
I want a 4 plus yr old - going down the trail horse- but not used or abused.
I need one ready to get serious about going to work - that can last
for 10 years- or more.

Roger 63 and starting to wear out some..

(of course we have Julie - going for the Tevis-- again.. but she is
special)

JRB> This is why I like to raise my own replacements.? Your
JRB> right Roger, buying and paying a lot for an endurance prospect is
JRB> a big deal.? I personally can't afford to pay the 3k and up for a
JRB> horse.? I agree...to pay that, they had better met and greet all
JRB> qualifications.? If you put a lot of money into a prospect, then
