. We've lost about 8 % of our calf crop this year to coyotes. Bummer!

Barbara, I would not dispute this at all.....however just wanted to share
what happened when lived somewhat in your neck of the woods (La Honda, also
Santa Cruz Mtns.). I lived there for 5 years....and there were ranches on
the outskirts, with folks running cattle and raising calves and horses. In
those 5 years I never heard of any reports of livestock losses to native
perdators. However, on a MONTHLY basis, there were problems with packs of
pet dogs (owned by homowners who turned them loose during the day so they
could "play" in the country). I remember hearing all the time about dogs
running down deer, killing fawns, hamstringing a colt, and even severely
attacking little kids at the bus stop! I put 5 years into trying to do
something about this (got tired of being threatened and bit by loose dogs),
to no avail. Animal Control got sick and tired of me calling to complain
about the loose dogs....

I'll take coyotes over a dog pack any day.
Karen
