Re: [RC] Blanketing...was New to sport too - Diane - Maggie Mieske

Twenty lashes with a wet noodle for me....I shouldn't have said RUN
FAST...my intent was to indicate that we expect our endurance horses to work
harder than the average horse...for some of us that's lots of trotting, for
some of us that's an easy canter and for some of us it's running fast...in
any case, we expect them to recover and cooling down is part of the recovery
process....so no flames please. ;) Now, what do you think about that in
relation to blanketing? :)

I do not blanket unless a horse gets wet and is shivering. I recently had
an interesting conversation with a fellow rider (Carol and I can't pull
the
last name out of the foggy memory banks...Steiner, I think it is)....What
are we constantly conditioning our horses to do? Run fast, recover AND
COOL
DOWN quickly. I HAVE noticed that the first horses to get chilled are the
two we compete on...quite an interesting point Carol has! What does
everyone else think of that theory? We don't usually blanket but when
it's
damp, I will go ahead and blanket Malik nowadays so he doesn't get chilled
to the point of shivering...I used to think what a wussy. But now I think
Carol is right and perhaps we have conditioned their bodies to cool down
so
much and not retain heat that blanketing may be inevitable at some
point...I
am interested to see what others have to say...

We lived in WI with our horses for 30 years. We never blanketed our
pastured horses even at -30 F. Under pasture conditions blanketing of
healthy horses is not required. They do need to be able to get shelter
from
the wind etc. And a roof during freezine rain is very nice also.

Now horses at rides with limited ability to move etc. are a different
story.
We watch weather and blanket frequently.
