Re: [RC] [RC] Remote dog collar - Laurie Durgin

For those of us who use electric fence, some horse 'know' when it is on or off.(you can actually hear a buzz on mine). Honey won't test it if it's on,but the minute you turn it off she is pushing under the cross fence to get the grass.(she also opens stall doors unless you have a special clip on them, she even locks the horses in sometimes if I forget to clip the doors back and she is teaching Scout to do it too. Now he will play with the gate handles too, after watching Honey lift a latch, then pull the chain up over the pole.(I had to add a hot wire over the gate to stop her, she knows where the clover grows. :)
Kind of like the 'crop' thing with Champ, sometimes he is so lazy going out to trailride, just walks slower and slower(unless of course it is on the way home), but if you 'carry' a crop ,not use it ,just carry it, he moves out right smartly.?Rascal when he was learning to jump, would try to run out,but if Charity just 'carried ' a crop he would go just fine.Obeyed to the letter.
My dogs have a field frence, but dig under (the big ones, and the small ones went thru), till we got underground fence with shock collars. We did have to train them though. One dog thought the shock was out the kitchen door,so he would only go out the front door, silly dog. We finally shoved himout a few times after teaching him the boundaries). They hear the warning buzzer, then stop. The older ones only dig out if not wearing collars for a few days. No dummies. A girl I new in college did a research project on using shock collars. It has been a few years, but here's what I remember from her project.

She used a grey arab that cribbed. She hid in the top of the barn.
She used peep holes to see out of. Everyday when the horse was brought
into the barn, a shock collar was placed on the horse. She observed
for the entire time the horse was in the stall. When the horse would
begin to crib, she would press the shock button. Eventually he quit
cribbing while he was in the stall WITH the shock collar on. As long
as that collar was on him, he would not crib. She also observed that
when he went into the stall and NO shock collar was put on him, he did
go back to cribbing. He knew when it was there and when it wasn't.

Some of those horses are just too smart! I thought that was an
interesting research project though. The girl had to get bored though
- just sitting there for hours watching a horse standing in a stall
hours a day - for weeks!

This is just what I remember from years ago - so it is very possible
that I have forgotten some of the control factors...
