Re: [RC] [RC] storms - Laurie Durgin

Hurricanes are a different animal. But for just nasty storms I either just open the barn doors and clip the doors back so they can choose (like today (dutch doors all stalls open to the outside (and it's really interesting to see a 16.1 tb., 2 14.2 arabs, and one 15.2+ 2 yr. old all standing in the same stall). But when I know there is going to be high winds(rare) I lock up, because we have lots of trees, some with dead branches to protect them from flying debris. But my barnis ina low spot. Sometimes if lots of lightening I pu tthem up as we are on a ridge and the barn is in the lowest spot and have had lightening strike a pole next to our riding arena. Laurie/Rascal/honey/Scout

I'm guessing if we kept them in a padded cellar during storms we might be able to keep them safe, but then again horses have a tallent for hurting them selves. When I was 3 our neighbors pony was struck by lighting standing in the feild in front of our house. When I was 6 a tornado hit our friends barn killing 2 horses. Really it depends so much on the type of storm. I'm looking forward to hearing what people have to say on this subject.

Hello, I was intrested to know where is the safest place for a horse to be durring severe weather? Some peole say inside the barn and others say out in the pasture so they can run from flying debris. Is there any way to keep a horse safe?
