Re: [RC] Favorite English Style Endurance Saddle - Magnumsmom

Hi Robin,

I've had great success with both of my Stubben's. I
have Magnum the TB ex-racer (love him! great horse!)
and I got him a Stubben Survival (found it new on sale)
in a tree width that fit him and a seat size that fit
me. It is a great saddle. The two of them are still
going strong. He's 22 as of January this year and I
bought the saddle in 1993. Aside from normal wear
it looks great. We did lots of miles together, a 30
and 2 50s before he was retired to ring / trail work.
Magnum has been fat and thin and the Stubben just always
seams to fit him. The Survival is a forward seat.

When I bought Blue, my arabian, I started with a Collegiate
and it fit him... for a year. Then it gave him a sore back
after 50 miles even though it looked like it still should fit.
It hadn't been a problem during shorter rides, or the 50s we
did that first year. I looked at tons of saddles and bought
him a brand new Stubben Kerry GX LD, (same tree as the Survival,
but with a more "dressagey" seat). It fits him great and we've
done all of his rides since 1999 in it. I clean and oil them
and use plastic endurance trail stirrups. Blue's back has been
fine, this saddle fits him well.

I tried a beautiful new Corbette Kurfurst on him (really
wanted an excuse to buy one!) but the tree didn't fit him
at all.

I have a friend who rides her arab in a Stubben Sigfried. I
tried one on Blue, but the Sigfried didn't fit him. The
Kerry tree does. Go figure.

One of the keys here is that not only did I buy a saddle with
a tree that fit, but I bought new so the wool stuffing custom
formed to each horse's back (don't let anyone use it on a
different horse either!). I would imagine a used saddle with
a good restuffing job would do the same.

I paid $1600 new for Blue's saddle which is a fair price I think
for a great quality saddle that custom formed to his back.

Just FYI, Magnum is "old time lines" tracing back to Princequillo
and Nasrullah. He has no Northern Dancer. He litterally looks
like the front half of Princequillo spliced onto the back half of
Bold Ruler (by Nasrullah). He has a big butt, his back dips, and
then he has nice withers. (He also has a big royally bred hay
belly, but that's another story). Hope this helps,

... currently still in CA as a beginner's lesson horse and loving it
and Mr Maajistic... aka Blue
... hoping to finally get to 1000 AERC miles this year... hope this
doesn't jinx us!
