Re: [RC] Trailering with automatic transmission - Elizabeth Walker

I just want to be sure I understand this, Truman.

So -- for a diesel, an exhaust brake is a good option to have, but may not be needed for a gas engine. Is that correct?

That's why exhaust brakes were invented. With a Diesel compression braking doesn't work all that well independent on transmission type.

It doesn't work lots of places. If it's steep enough, and long enough, you WILL end up going too fast, or putting too much strain on your engine, with most automatics -- even in 4WD (which helps to slow you), and in the lowest setting "1" ... and yes, I know the newer automatics work better, but I still prefer a standard. More control.

For some reason, that didn't work in Oak Creek Canyon. That was

With an automatic, just drop it into 2 (or even 1 or low) and let the
engine provide the braking. Tap the brakes to keep the inertial speed
down (like, 40ish) to save the transmission. Always worked coming
down
to Auburn from Reno or Robie with a trailer . . . and commuting to
work
in bad weather in my Chevy 3/4 ton on a 6 percent grade highway.
