For some reason, that didn't work in Oak Creek Canyon. That was in 1989 with a Ford Diesel auto trans predating 1989. Even putting it into a lower range did not hold it enough.

With an automatic, just drop it into 2 (or even 1 or low) and let the engine provide the braking. Tap the brakes to keep the inertial speed down (like, 40ish) to save the transmission. Always worked coming down to Auburn from Reno or Robie with a trailer . . . and commuting to work in bad weather in my Chevy 3/4 ton on a 6 percent grade highway.
