Re: [RC] Trailering with automatic transmission - Carla Richardson

It doesn't work lots of places.  If it's steep enough, and long enough, you WILL end up going too fast, or putting too much strain on your engine, with most automatics -- even in 4WD (which helps to slow you), and in the lowest setting "1" ... and yes, I know the newer automatics work better, but I still prefer a standard.  More control.

For some reason, that didn't work in Oak Creek Canyon.  That was in 1989 with a Ford Diesel auto trans predating 1989.  Even putting it into a lower range did not hold it enough.

Twenty or thirty miles is a good start. How much you've missed by living on flatland! It's the thrill of a lifetime going down a long hill will diminishing control and brakes. :-))

With an automatic, just drop it into 2 (or even 1 or low) and let the
engine provide the braking.  Tap the brakes to keep the inertial speed
down (like, 40ish) to save the transmission.  Always worked coming down
to Auburn from Reno or Robie with a trailer . . . and commuting to work
in bad weather in my Chevy 3/4 ton on a 6 percent grade highway.
