[RC] Awards - Dream Weaver

1. Do awards make a difference as to whether you'd go to a ride or not? If so, what's the minimum type of award that makes the difference?

I'd rather have a lower entry fee and not get an award or get an inexpensive one, if given the choice.  I don't let getting an award persuade me one way or another about going to a ride.

2. Rides used to give out buckles for awards, but don't any more. Is it because they're too expensive and add a cost to the ride that riders won't bear? Or is it because riders don't care about buckles?

Pewter buckles aren't that expensive but you probably need to order 12 dozen or more.  I think that most riders would rather have something more useful and like having the real silver buckles reserved for the more challenging rides like Tevis or Virginia City.

3. What about T-shirts? Jackets?

Always useful, yes!

4. What's the best completion or other award you've ever gotten? And would you want to always be able to get an award like that?

My best awards are jackets for doing all the days of a multiday ride on the same horse, or sweatshirts for doing 3 days.  Second to that would be the rump rug I got for doing all 6 days of Fort Stanton on the same horse.  I like these things because they are useful.  I like continuing to get jackets because they do wear out.

5. What's the lousiest completion award you've ever gotten? And if you feel it was lousy, why?

It would be going to a ride and doing a 100 and getting the same award the other distances got.  I'd rather have a rock or something that was unique as an award to remember the ride with that would remind me that I did the 100 at that ride that year.  It doesn't matter what the award actually is or the cost, the value of it to me is in the doing/earning it - but I would like to have it be different or unique to whatever distance I rode.  After doing some of the same rides multiple times if they have the same or similar awards year after year pretty soon you have no way of knowing what year you rode what distance.

6. What's your recommendation for a perfect completion award?

I like anything that is useful.  It can be a hoof pick, bungee cord, bucket, brushes or grooming tools, lead ropes, feed pans, organizers, chairs, t-shirts.  A step up from that is something that has the ride name on it or is unique to the ride, like a ride photo.  I like getting the custom cups, coasters and plaques that the Duck gives out with our names on them.  When reaching special milestones we can have our horses names and the achievement put on them, so we can always remember that particular ride which to me, makes it perfect.  :)
