[RC] Helmet ? - New Florida law - carolyn

I wore one of those velvet hard hats when I was a kid during our riding lessons.  They were mandatory.  All I remember was that anytime anyone came off their horses, those helmets would pop off when you hit the ground.  No protection whatsoever.

Anyone who rode as a kid, do you ever remember anyone getting head injuries from riding?  I don't.  We galloped everywhere, no helmet, no gloves, in sneakers, jeans and t-shirts.  I also never remember ever seeing a lame horse.

Are we doing something differently now than 40 years ago, not only with care and training of our horses, but with how we ride that are making ourselves more injury prone for ourselves and our horses?

I used to ride my horse and bicycle all over Hell's half acre all the time wearing a baseball cap. Never gave it a thought. Today in some places kids are required by law to wear helmets while on their bikes. On state lands (and most of the riding is on state lands in Florida) kids are required to wear a helmet.

I must say that I am happy I was a kid when I was a kid. Those were simpler times and the risk were less. The problem I think is simply too many people.

Truman- how about some statistics  on injuriy severity and helmet use?
