Thanks Don,
My horses must have gotten into a ticks nest last year as this is exactly what you describe except it was in their ears. Very painful. Took days to resolve.
And, I didn't know it until one of them pulled back violently when being bridled. Since he'd never done that before I had to go looking deeper.
