Re: [RC] Opinions wanted - Elizabeth Walker

Very good point Lif. I overlooked the part about the recent weight gain.

The clover and alfalfa would be big concerns for me. I'd be concerned about the richness of the pasture, particularly as she's gained weight so rapidly from it. A touch of laminitis would be something you could easily miss the symptoms for. Generally with laminitis the feet feel hotter than you'd expect and/or you can feel pulses in the heels, but you might not be able to feel this with your mare and she still could have a mild case of laminitis.

I'd get a lot of probiotics in your mare ASAP - whenever a horse has any problems, I like to give them probiotics. I'd take her off that pasture and feed her grass hay for a while to see if her behavior changes. A bit of bute, if a veterinarian advised it, might help. If it is a mild laminitis, keeping your mare on that pasture could aggravate the situation. Unfortunately, mild cases can become fatal cases - I've seen that up close and personal.
