Where in the original post did it say that the horse galloped?  Also, there have been adequate posts on RC to the effect that the pace on 50 mile rides is often the same as on 25's.  For reasons unrelated to racing or training, the pace on some LD's is relatively slow, this could have been the case here.
 
Even though some consider an LD to be a "training" ride, where does it say that in the rules?
 
I have done relatively rapid LD's on 50 mile endurance horses for a variety of reasons.
