Re: [RC] "ask the mechanic" (was tire pressures) - Truman Prevatt

Oil blends and formulations and engines have come a long way in the last 20 years where it was "every 3000 miles." A lot depends on how you drive. Open highway driving is easier on you engine and your oil will last longer than stop and go driving in the city. Pulling a heavy load will require more frequent oil changes than not pulling a heavy load. What does you manual say about oil change intervals? The computer estimates the oil change interval based on how the vehicle is driven. I don't know if I would believe it 100%, but use it as a guide.

Rick, and anyone else with similar qualifications:

My 2004 GMC 1500 has an oil change light and a computer that tells me what percentage I have left on my oil life. At 4300 miles since my last oil change, it still says 47% oil life remaining.

We are using regular oil, not synthetic. This is my tow vehicle but it only tows about once a month (to keep this endurance related, this is because I have local trails for training and can only afford to compete once a month). It is also my commuting vehicle so it travels 80 mi per day, 4-5 days a week.

Should I believe the truck's computer, or should I believe my very trustworthy mechanic who swears by changing the oil every 3000-3500 miles? If I sided with the mechanic, I'd be changing the oil every month and a half or so.

Thanks,
Sharon L. in Maine
