I'm not certified, but will answer anyway. There is no possible way that the "computer" can actually know what is going on with the oil. It has to be looking at either hours, or mileage. I suspect that it is miles, and the computer is just reporting the elapsed miles in light of the manufacturer's "normal" recommendations.

My personal feeling, and I have put long mileage on lots of cars/trucks, is to assume that your personal usage is "hard" and change oil very often. Oil is much cheaper than an engine overhaul.
