Re: [RC] [RC] LD and Placings - Diane Trefethen

Why do you assume that the quality of a 50 miler is going to be better than the quality of a 25 miler?? More does not automatically mean better :) I do not see what the problem is for charging the same when the expenses are the same. I think that Tammy made a very good point in her post about expenses.

I could be wrong, but I do not think that Joe was using "quality" in the "value" sense but rather in the "texture/grading" sense, ie: "The quality of the sandpaper was #2", not "The quality of the sewing was substandard".

I find it interesting that you feel that ride managers and other riders should carry the expenses of the LD distance

LOL! This is exactly the "bitch" that many LD riders have had, that they are "carrying" the longer distances.

I have never run a ride but I've helped at a lot of them. From my limited perspective, it seems as if the largest single expense is the vets. 1) Because 100 milers "see" the vets a lot more than 50 milers who "see" the vets a lot more than the LD riders, riders take up proportionally more vet time as the distance they ride increases, 2) Although the treatment vets are available to all riders equally, given the pull rates, clearly their services are used more by the 100s than the 50s and the LDs, and 3) Aside from the *cost* per rider for the vets, consider the return to the riders. If a vet charges $120 for a soundness exam and your LD horse gets two 5 minute exams plus a quickie, that's about $50 outside a ride. If it gets 2 good exams plus 3 quickies on a 50, that's $70 and about $100 on a 100.

That being said, I would like to point out that when I started, the cost to enter the "Novice" rides in the CA Bay Area was about $25-40 while the contingent 50 was about $50-70. So adding Top Ten, BC, yr-end awards etc, etc, has clearly had an effect on the cost of LDs to both RMs and the AERC.
