Why do you assume that the quality of a 50 miler is going to be better than the quality of a 25 miler?? More does not automatically mean better :) I do not see what the problem is for charging the same when the expenses are the same. I think that Tammy made a very good point in her post about expenses.

The theater is an example. There, the "good seats" are close to the stage and well-centered. In the case of a ride, it isn't a matter of better vets or better marking that is different -- it is that the riders in a 50-mile ride get to ride twice as much trail as the riders in the 25-mile ride. Don't you think that's worth something? I do.

Theaters, airlines, baseball teams, and many other for-profit businesses manage to adjust the prices according to the value the customer receives, not just charge everyone the same. I don't see why ride managers can't do the same. I did it, and didn't find it difficult to do.

I find it interesting that you feel that ride managers and other riders should carry the expenses of the LD distance because you assume the shorter distance should be less money and because you want to attract new riders? Perhaps when you managed rides there was a significant difference in "costs" between the 25 and 50 which you passed on to riders. But in many cases (probably another regional thing) this is not the case.

Don't forget that most 50-mile rides could not long exist if it were not for the entry fees from the LD riders. You could say that LD riders have "carried" the endurance rides for years. Now you're expecting them to pay the same fee for half as much time and distance.

I would expect riders who are told that they have to pay the same amount to ride 25 miles as others pay to ride 50 miles would feel "ripped off" (I know I would). That makes them less likely to come back.

The best thing about this sport is that we can vote with our feet. If you don't like how a ride manager runs a ride or like what a ride manager charges, don't support that ride. In the PS region, there are rides every weekend or every other weekend for most of the year. Riders are not getting the short end of the stick.

As I said, that's exactly what I do. I will not enter a 25-mile ride that charges the same as a 50-mile ride at the same event.
