I don't have thick hair but it is somewhat long.  I twist it up on top 
of my head and secure it with an old fashioned comb like our 
grandmothers used to use.  If yours is too thick to do that, consider 
having it restyled with thinning and/or layering.  You might get a new, 
more attractive look for your hair AND save money not buying and 
discarding multiple helmets :)
