Re: [RC] How can I tell when horse is ready for an LD? - Betsy Thomas

She is a little under 13.2 hands but has good feet/legs. I am 5 feet tall and 105 pounds and ride with a reasonably lightweight saddle (specialized international) .

Her little pony-jog does make it harder for us to keep up with fast trotters (arabs, warmbloods, TBs) but we do that for practice sometimes on weekdays. For distance we have found the western trail- riders work well because the trot stays slow enough for her pony legs to handle.

Thanks,
Betsy

Besty, I'll let others give you advice (and I'll pay attention). How "little" is she?

I'm conditioning a 13.3 Icelandic right now. She's an absolute kick to ride. I feel like a 66 year old kid with my first pony.

Her heart rate and recoveries are pretty much consistant with by TWH. I truly do miss that nice Arab metabolism

She's doing well, but I'm a little concerned with her ability to sustain the consistant pace she'd need for a completion. I need to switch horses on some of our conditioning rides and see how she does with the group.
