Re: [RC] [RC] How can I tell when horse is ready for an LD? - Kathy Mayeda

I went to a ride with some friends who have never done an LD before.  One, who is pretty experienced rider outside of endurance, was riding a paint that went crazy during the ride and ran off with her. She RO'd. One of the husbands was riding an Icelandic that they don't want to give a shave job and she over-heated so the husband and wife RO'd.  So there were three RO's among us.  I finished riding with on my 18 y.o. Arab mare with the Kiger Mustang .  The Kiger was trotting and walking pretty steady throughout the ride, and was the greenest among all of us - including the husband that was riding him.

So..... there's a lot more to how ready the horses are than heart rates and conditioning!

I say just do it, ride conservatively and see how it goes.   I think the mental condition of the horse is just as important as the physical when you are just starting out.

Besty, I'll let others give you advice (and I'll pay attention).  How "little" is she?

I'm conditioning a 13.3 Icelandic right now.  She's an absolute kick to ride.  I feel like a 66 year old kid with my first pony.

Her heart rate and recoveries are pretty much consistant with by TWH.  I truly do miss that nice Arab metabolism

She's doing well, but I'm a little concerned with her ability to sustain the consistant pace she'd need for a completion.  I need to switch horses on some of our conditioning rides and see how she does with the group.
