Re: [RC] Question on odd heart rate on two TWH - Nancy Sturm

Well, the heart rate on the second horse doesn't sound odd to me, it sounds wonderful. He also sounds like he's a nicely gaited TWH. Smooth to ride with an Arab-type metabolism. It doesn't get much better than that.

I am not an expert on either endurance or gaited horses, but I do ride a little TWH in limited distance. He's beginning his fourth season. He's a quick nervy little guy and in the beginning getting him pulsed down wasn't as easy as it had been with my Arab gelding. One of the things that has made a difference for him is a good conditioning program. All the other horses we train with are Arabs and he does what they do. I also used the HRM to determine which gait(s) were more efficient for him and try to use them more than the gaits that elevate his heart rate. He trots at 120, but can flat walk (6 mph) at 65. And I notice that increased exposure to the wholr ride environment has helped calm him. He also does better if he has a buddy. With a horse partner, he now pulses down quicker than the Arabs at some rides.

Your first horse may not be cut out for endurance or he may need conditioning and exposure.

Nancy
