Re: [RC] Trailer addident/endurance rider in need - Nancy Sturm

Now is a good time to talk about what to do if a trailer begins to fishtail. I asked my husband if I should brake slowly if the trailer starts fishtailing. He warned that speeding up is the way to stop a fishtailing trailer.

A few years ago, coming home from the Welsh Nationals, the 26 ft travel trailer we were pulling started to fishtail. My husband hit the brakes and that trailer came around past us, started to roll and caused the 1 ton Ford van we were tpwong with to roll too. We did a complete 180. We had our grandson, a tiny poodle and two of our disabled kids with us. The wheelchairs were attached to the frame of the van with tie-downs and despite the fact that both the trailer and van were totaled and the kids were hanging upside down in their wheelchairs, the only injury was a broken wrist I sustained. It was so traumatic an experience that I got teary eyed just reading about Dave's accident. I have always been grateful someone else was hauling the ponies. How tragic to have lost a horse too.
