As a teenager we had a four horse stock trailer, and we would regularly trailer two horses at a time.  We always set the trialer up as two box stalls, and left the horses untied.  We did not have a extended cab pickup, so I usually followed the trailer in a second vehicle.  The horses ALWAYS turned around facing the rear.  It did not matter if it was a 30 minute or 3 hour ride.
