Re: [RC] VVMarchmadness - Katrina Mosshammer

I feel your pain Beth.

I was off to a good start. I was riding Perle, my hungarian mare, in the 50 in Okla. on March 1st. We were doing great coming in to the first VC. Perle was all fidgety because she didn't have a buddy so it took a little bit to get her to settle down and meet criteria. So then we went to the vet and she said she looks good all As except a B on skin tint. Then she was taking her pulse for the CRI an Perle was fidgeting so it took her a long time to get the pulse and she said she heard something weird. She went ahead and had me trot and finished the rest of the exam and she was all A's on everything else. So she took the last pulse and I think the CRI was 48/48. But she said she has an extra beat in there. So she had the other vet listen and at first she didn't hear anything but she told her to listen for a long time and then she heard it. I asked if it was because she was all nervous and would that make her pulse go up and down? She said it was not like her pulse was going up and down it was an arrhythmia (?sp) So I asked if this could be an e-lyte problem and she said she couldn't say, but she was concerned because everything else looked so good and she had heard it both before trotting and after and the only reason she caught it was because she had listened for longer than 60 sec. She pulled us and said we'll check her again later and see if it is still there. So 30 min later she checked still doing it and again 2 hrs later, although not as frequently, so all the vet students that were working got something interesting to listen to. She told me not to ride her again until I got an EKG done on her, not even at home. I took her to OSU Tues. and they did some blood work and everything looked good there so they did the 24hr EKG and then sent her home. So she's stuck in the stall until we get the results back on the EKG.

So this weekend my 5 yo niece stayed with me and just "had to ride". So my friend said she could ride one of her old ranch horses and she would pony her along on her first "trail ride". Which meant that I was stuck riding my 5 yo arab, which usually mom rides, Deke (AKA the "sawhorse") and let me tell you my seat bones were killing me in less than a mile. He is so darned narrow and I am so used to Perle with her nice round ribs. I managed to last about 3.5 miles and a little over an hour before we stopped. But the niece had a great time and was still wanting to do some more! Here are some pics from our ride Sat.
