RE: [RC] Will reducing the number of wt divisions change the number of awards? - Kristen A Fisher

Actually Mike did address this point in another of his emails:
"While LW riders may have twice as many riders competing - they get about
twice as many award placings so I withdraw my point about competition being
harder for an award in LW than HW."

If you have more people competing in a weight division, but you also give
out more awards, then it's the same. Per his example, if there are 200 in
LW, they give out 5% or 10 awards. If there are only 100 in HW, they give
out 5% or 5 awards. Thus it's not harder to compete in a division with more
people [though since the max is 10 awards per div it can be harder if there
are >200 in a given division but per Mike this is rare].

AERC uses the rule that the award placings for wt
divisions go to the
top 5% of the members in a wt division or 10 whichever is *lower*.

How do you figure? No matter how few awards are given in one
division, it doesn't affect how many people YOU have to
compete against if you are in a different division. The only
way you could "reduce/eliminate the disadvantage" of being in
a large division would be if AERC said, "Ok. We have 4 wt
divisions so we will give out 40 awards and we'll pro-rate
the number of awards per division based on the number of
people riding in that division." That way if you had 100
riding in each FW and HW, 200 MW and 400 LT, AERC would dole
out 20 awards to the LW div (5% of the number of LW riders),
10 to the MW div (5% of the MW riders), and 5 each to the FW
and HW divs (5% of the FW and HW riders). Thus, no matter
what div you rode in, you'd have a 1 in 20 chance of getting
an award. THAT would eliminate the disadvantage of riding in
a division with more riders.

BTW... I am NOT, NOT, NOT suggesting this as a program!!!!!
Just addressing the specific comment :)
