RE: [RC] re: age per miles - ft bragg nc area - Someone Somewhere

honestly, yes, i probably would pull out, if it meant riding alone.
at the time of my accident, i worked with 30 horses a day, frequently alone. i spent 5 1/2 to 7 hrs a day in the saddle, depending on if it were just a trail ride day, or if i had to excercise the tb's, some of whom were 3 yo ottb, and yes, i did a lot of my work alone, or, as the only experienced rider on the ride, i can say i have seen a LOT of unexpected, unpreventable incidents, and just feel now that there is no reason to ever take that risk again.
i will ocasionally take my gelding out for a ride alone, but i don't hit the trails, i ride up my road, where i know if i fell off, someone would come along to help me eventually. still, it's not a garauntee, what if my horse spooked and ran into the woods? he is relatively well behaved, (well okie, he's barn sour, and bucks on the way home on a bad day, we're working on it lol) but he is still a 1,000 pound animal, and truth be told, if he has his mind set on something, 145 lb me is NOT stopping him.
and thanks ranelle, i don't feel bad, and, and kudos for gettin back up in that saddle again after your accident, it is so-hard-to-do isn't it?
on a side note, ALWAYS keep your cell phone on you, not your saddle, it literly saved my life :)
i'm looking forward to someday trying endurance riding, i'll prolly be a wussy rider, but hey, i'm old enough now to do things just because i enjoy them, and not to be the best, just the best for me :)

Don't let anyone make you feel bad for not wanting to ride alone. I, too had an incident once that caused me to avoid riding alone if at all possible. I ran into a bear while on a very rarely used trail. My horse spun back up a very steep hill, I ended up doing an unplanned flying dismount, landed on my water bottle that was on my waist. I could not get back on my horse. There is a suture in your pelvis that had "slipped"..I could not stand on one leg, could not raise my other leg. Thankfully my horse stayed with me, and also knew how to tail. He pulled me out of a canyon in 105 degree heat on August 25th.

When I got to civilization, I flagged down a passerby. She later said that as soon as I handed her the horse's reins, I passed out.

I only ride alone when I can tell someone where I am going and when I will be back. Then I stay on the Tevis trail, or the Folsom Lake trail where there is a reasonable amount of recreational use.

It takes a bit of work to build a network of local riders, but it is worth it, IMO..

i do need a buddy, i don't ride alone. i had a VERY serious accident about 4 years ago, as in ambulance, life flight, lucky to be alive, accident, while working with my horse alone, now i wont go out by myself, and will barely handle them if im home myself, unless its an emrgency.

That sounds awesome!!!!!:-) But don't wait for a buddy to ride with  ....just go out and ride and then come to an endurance ride!!!!!!! It is the MOST fun you will ever have!!!!!!:-) And on the subject of age, Nancy Beacon one of our great riders in Ontario did the last Pan Am games in North America ( so 100 miles) at 69!!:-)

How DO you all find these amazing places where you can ride from your door to miles of trails and not have to trailer every time you want to ride?  Seriously, I'm ready to move if I found something like that!
