RE: [RC] Vaccination reaction - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVM

Title: Vaccination reaction

You can hot pack it a few times a day if they’ll let you (actually ideal would be fifteen minutes of warm followed by fifteen minutes nothing, then fifteen minutes of cold, and repeat ad infinitum), and give them a little bute for a day or so.  Exercise will help a little in that it increases overall circulation, and thus relieve swelling to some extent but anything short of fourth level dressage moves won’t do much to exercise those neck muscles directly.

Good luck.

Subject: [RC] Vaccination reaction

Two of my mares received their vaccinations on Friday and now they both have a huge swollen area on the neck where the shot was given.  I’ve never experienced this before with shots – any suggestions as to what I should do?
