[RC] Stethoscopes - Bruce Weary DC

Stethoscopes vary in quality, and the cheaper ones are usually "monoaural," meaning there is only a single tube leading to the earpieces. A stereo stethoscope is better for hearing the "quality" of sounds, like heart murmurs, gurgling in the digestive tract and airway restrictions. If you only want to hear and count heartbeats, most any kind that works will do. If you want more information from what you are hearing, a stereo stethoscope will capture more sound and allows for more detail. Most stereo types also use rubberized tubes, which work better than the plastic, single tube type. As a side note, the future standard will probably be the new, cool, electronic stethoscopes, which are very high performance. Great for listening through walls when the neighbors are having a party. :> Dr Q
